It’s thought that CBD might affect your health by attaching to receptors in the body’s endocannabinoid system—a complex biological system involved in maintaining certain aspects of your health. Emerging research shows that endocannabinoids may play a role in regulating such functions as memory, sleep, and mood, as well as metabolic processes like energy balance. In the study, results suggested that the CYP3A4 enzyme was inactivated in many cases by dosages of CBD. This was due to the fact that CBD and the CYP3A4 enzyme had a defensive reaction to one another, thus causing the metabolites of CBD to become less effective as well. In other words, the CYP3A4 enzyme and CBD seem to “cancel out” the benefits of one another when CBD is taken simultaneously with certain medications. Though this can be a very important side effect to consider if a prescribed medication is vital for everyday functions in patients, there has also been evidence to suggest that the battle between CBD and the CYP3A4 enzyme within the liver is only temporary. According to the same study cited above, test results in rodents have shown that “CBD inactivates cytochrome P450 isozymes in the short term, but can induce them after repeated administration”. Therefore, CBD as a more long-term adjunct treatment may have no effect on the potency of pharmaceutical drugs and may even possess the ability to counteract some of the side effects of the prescribed medications.
